How to choose the right WordPress theme

WordPress is the most popular CMS today. It is very easy to use and configure for anything from a small business to an enterprise site. One of the reasons so many people use the platform is the number of themes that are available.

There are thousands of themes to choose from, and it can be overwhelming to choose one. How to find the one that will really work for you? We have selected  useful tips when choosing your first template.

  •  CHOOSE A RESPONSIVE THEME

Responsive design simply means making your site ultra easy to use, not just on a laptop, but on multiple devices. This means that it’s compatible with mobile and has menus and other widgets that are easy to navigate.

  • DESIGN IS NOT THE MAIN CRITERIA

Usually, people choose website themes considering only it’s design. That’s totally wrong. When selecting a theme, you should realize what exactly you need, what kind of content you want to publish, your target audience, and other special elements such as advertising blocks or banners.

Definitely choose a theme you like the look of, but make sure it is a functioning theme.

  •  NO COMPLEX TEMPLATES

Some themes can really slow down your site, causing visitors to leave before they take in any information. Make sure the theme you choose is optimized. Otherwise you might risk alienating your audience.

  • KEEP COLOR IN MIND

Remember, most of online marketing is based on visual appearance, and colors increase brand recognition as well. If you have a logo, try to match your color scheme of that logo.

If trying to decide between dark and light, note that it’s statistically shown that site visitors prefer lighter colored sights. While a dark website design isn’t an absolute no, if you do choose to option for the dark side know that you are decreasing readability and the opportunity for more conventional design elements.

  • TRY A DEMO FIRST

Before installing a theme make sure you try the demo first.

Play around with the demo version and see if it feels easy for you to use and fits your brand. If you like the way it works, go ahead and download!

  • WHAT ARE YOUR COMPETITORS USING?

If you want to stand out from the crowd, you’d better do research on your rivals. This will help you to have a general view on the other websites of the same niche. By doing this, you’ll have a clear picture of what should be improved or added to your theme. Interestingly, sometimes you can do your blog a big favor by doing something very different in your niche because it helps to set you apart from the competition while also perhaps getting you noticed.

  • SEO

With WordPress you can install plugins like SEO by Yoast, but what if your theme doesn’t support this plugin or it doesn’t have a basic SEO framework? Keep your eyes peeled for SEO mentions in the feature list. Check the theme demos and see if it loads quickly. Slow page loads are no good for SEO.
